This is an excellent giveaway, Internet!
Borders Bookstore was kind enough to send me the Sony Reader Touch to try out and review, and are offering one for one of my readers as well! Lucky you!
Those commenting for this giveaway are entering for a chance to win a Sony Touch pre-loaded with 10 top titles (selected by Borders) for their Active Duty spouse! With Valentines Day right around the corner [sheesh ... are we there already??] this makes an excellent giveaway, especially if your loved one is currently deployed!
Before I go into the details of why this thing is so awesome, let go over the rules, shall we?
Rules for Entry
- You or your spouse must currently be Active Duty. An AKO account email address (or any other .mil address) must be provided by the winner so that Borders may email the individual to let them know when the Sony Reader will be shipped. You are more than welcome to enter for your spouse.
- Please answer the following question in your comment: Will EBooks and Readers change the way you shop for books?
- To make it totally fair to everyone, winners will be selected at random via Random.org.
- Winners will be announced on Wednesday, January 27th [two weeks from now] so check back then!
That’s is! So easy.
The thing that I like most about the Sony Reader is how light weight it is for it’s size. The display itself is 6″ wide, which make for easy reading. It also has a flip capability, so if the text is too small for you upright, you can change your settings and read it sideways basically, enlarging the text and making it easier to read. You can also enlarge the text to make it easier. And turning pages? Easy with just a touch of the screen. Or the stylus. Because yes, it comes with a stylus. As with most of the EReaders that are out there, it is not back lit, giving it a more “natural” feel to reading. My eyeballs thank it for this.
The other thing that I love about it is the easy to download books. The program that is used is very much like your iTunes store, which being the avid apples fan that I am, was a huge bonus. Books can be purchased with a click, and instantly transferred to your Sony Reader. And the storage! 512MB of on board memory means storing up to 350 titles at one time, which is awesome for me and the husband because we both LOVE to read. This will be perfect for all the vacations that we have planned. Dual slots for memory cards are also available to increase capacity based on how many books you read/need to have. The other bonus to this is that you are downloading via the Internet, instead of cell phone service [like some of the EBook Readers out there make you do], so if your service member is deployed, and has no access to a cell phone, this is more than likely a better fit for them.
I urge you to head to your local Border’s store and do a no hassle test drive for yourself if you are having doubts. [what?? You mean you're not going to take my word for gold? PSH!] I have been wanting an EReader for a while now, but glad that I didn’t jump the gun and buy some of the more well-known EReaders. And let’s face it — it’s a Sony. Which means that it pretty much will rock your socks off and be awesome. I’ve already downloaded a couple of books [which are much cheaper electronically than they would be in the store!] and it has been permanently placed in my purse, to be carried everywhere!
So there you go! Now who wants one??!
Comment away, and please feel free to spread the word!

Ooh! Pick me! Since we just did the PCS and have 20+ boxes labeled “Books” right now sitting in a spare bedroom, I (we) would LOVE a Sony Reader just to cut down on the sheer volume books take up! Plus, I love the idea of being able to download books online like iTunes, for myself and for little surprises for the hubs, rather than having to always go to the bookstore. Anyway, the Hubs would LOVE one, so consider me entered!
We have so many books, PCSing becomes painful when book packing time comes. We want to get rid of the bulk of our paper books and only purchase e-books from now on.
Way to go Borders! Thanks for supporting our troops! My hubby just deployed less than a week ago. I would do anything for him! He would love a Sony Reader! Thanks again Borders!

Packing, packing… do you KNOW how many boxes of books we are packing??? do you know how many books I packed for a two week R&R trip??? yeah, the carry on was a monster. I’ll give his AKO address, if required, on a private send, if that’s ok. imagine, carrying enough books to last his NEXT deployment in ONE small book sized package, instead of the trunks that are sitting in the garage right now, that just came back from the LAST deployment. It would be so so cool!
LAW
Oooh Oooh. Me me me.
Both my husband and I are absolutely book worms. Every time we more we have to purge books like crazy. Plus with a deployment pending it would sure be nice to ensure he had plenty of books to read while gone.
I definitely think e readers will change the way I buy books. It would be so awesome to have hundreds if not thousands of titles literally at your fingertips. You could have what you wanted right away, without worrying about space on a bookshelf. I also think that it will make me more likely to buy books. It will just be simpler and available any time of day or night. I won’t even have to get out of my pj’s or worry that the book store is closed.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!
That is SO awesome!
I would love it! So would hubby! It would be so much easier then having a thick book with me, and if I wanna switch books while I am out and about, I can choose from my collection.
Will EBooks and Readers change the way you shop for books? Yes, my the future is here already. ebooks are making it more affordable for college students and online students to study. I just finished my online degree and used all my ebooks online which it was convenient for me, I studies at work and on vacation and all I needed was my laptop or my cell phone. You don’t have to carry all those books around everywhere you go. I don’t buy books much anymore, I order them online or on my cell and read them. I wish school text books were all audio. that would help even more.
An E-reader would really make things easier for vacations and PCSing. Also it would make things easier as far as taking books on a deployment.
EReaders are amazing!
It would be awesome to be able to throw a small ereader in a bag and just go. Then you’d have several books right at your fingertips.
I read often. My hubby doesn’t but I’m pretty sure he would with something as cool as this!!
I think it would absolutely change the way I would shop for books! I think I would have to go into it more with an idea of what I want to read, instead of wandering around Border’s looking for something that looks good (ie cover design, browsing through covers). I think with an e-reader I’d have to know what I want before shopping for it. I also think that with cheaper books available on e-readers, I’d buy more rather than agonize over what I’m spending on reading material.
I would LOOVVVE and e-reader because I buy, on average, 6-8 books a month. You can imagine how much room that’s taking up in my office, and also how much BF would love to move them. BF is also getting ready to deploy, and he’s such a techie, that he would love a new toy to play with! (It also might give him something to do in Afghanistan.) PICK ME!
Yes the use of ereaders does change how one shops for books, no more used books stores, shopping online more than in the store, never having to worry about not finding the last copy .. and saving lots of space!!
Yes, I absolutely think the ereaders will change the way I shop for books. The biggest reason of all is my husband nor myself read very often. I think he gets bored with holding a book and will sometimes fall asleep while reading. Everything is electronic now so I can imagine him on TDY or a family vacation driving in the car and utilizing the sony reader touch. I also think this would be a great way to get my daughter to read more often than she does. All children love electronics! My husband has been outdoing me with gifts lately so this sony reader would make me wife of the year!!! Help an army wife out!
E-reader will definitely change the way I shop for books. I am an avid reader and always have been. I will probably buy even more books with this handy little gadget because it seems so simple and easy to do so. How handy that it holds so much yet it is so light! I love that especially for traveling and PCS season!
So fantastic!!!
Word!!!! I think you already know how I feel about this!!!!!!!! But reading will now have no affect on my OCD since it will be consolidated into one hand held device. I will also now read more than I already do and I cannot wait to get a new book at 3 am when I am awake for some unknown reason!
This would definitely change the way we shop for books, especially when my husband is deployed. It would be so great for him to be able to bring lots of books with him but really just one small item to pack. And yeh, definitely saving on the household weight…which would be great since we nearly hit the limit this last move. I’ve still got boxes of books I haven’t unpacked yet as they are waiting for shelves to be built. We’d still buy paperbooks (admit it, they just feel good)but less of them.
I’m feeling lucky!
Having an ereader would definitely change our book buying habits! DH already has several books he’s purchased while being overseas and recently was wondering what to do with them when the time comes for him to leave. Knowing him – and me – he’ll just pay to ship them back. So it’s expense (shipping) on top of expense (buying the book in the first place!)! We talked about reading a book at the same time too but of course that means purchasing whatever book twice – that would be so much easier if his were on an ereader!
My Husband and I have both been wanting an EReader for awhile now. We are both avid readers and this would be so handy. It would also cut down on the vast number of books we have to sort into give away and keep piles each time we move, not to mention the money we would save. Since my Husband is deployed right now, it would be great to send to him because they have so little free space and he could keep it safely in his pack.
Oh my gosh! I’ve been thinking of getting one for my husband! He’s constantly on deployment (being on a submarine does that) and since they barely even get email and rarely get fresh air/sunshine, all they have is reading and movies.
And Ebooks and Readers will definitely change the way I shop for books. It’ll actually be easier. I can shop without heading to the store and can do it anywhere I want. It would also be easy to send them to DH’s reader from far away!
Good luck to everyone
I think the Sony will make it much easier when it comes time to PCS and for when the hubby goes TDY – condensing many pounds of books into 1 small portable device is awesome. Because of this I’m sure ebooks will make us more likely to purchase more books.
Absolutely, the ebooks will change the way I read books. The way I shop for books, everything. First you have the weight issue with PCS moves, then you have the weight issue with deployments (hello, soldiers can’t take sooo many things with them on a deployment!). You also have the fact that you can just go online and in an instant have your book in hand..no waiting for shipping! Talk about benefits! Thanks for the opportunity!
Winning this would definitely change the way we buy books– right now my husband loves hard copies, but for his first deployment this March I know he would load this baby up with tons of e-books and mil manuals!
I believe that e-books will forever change the way my husband and I travel!!! Not only can my husband take it with him this year if he gets deployed but he can also take it with him to work and read there since his unit isn’t currently here.
Ebooks and the readers will make the way I buy books much easier. I hate when I finish reading a book and don’t feel like going out to the store, but want to start reading something new. With the Reader, I can just go online and download a new book. It would be great for traveling as well, it holds soo many books in such a small space.
Will EBooks and Readers change the way you shop for books?
My hubby bought me one for Valentine’s Day last year, and let me tell you. That was the best gift EVER!! It has definetly changed my reading life. It is so nice to have that little thing to carry around and not have books lying all over the house. I like to read more than one at a time, and this makes it so much easier to do!! My hubby is currently deployed and he was mad that I didn’t let him take mine with him. What a nice Valentine’s Day surprise this would make for him!!!
I’d love to win one for my husband who is in Iraq right now. We have 6 kids (ages 7, 5, 3, 3, 1, and 1) so we have a ton of books and things to move each time we PCS. This could help us when it comes time to PCS again too!
I don’t think an e-reader would change the way I shop for books. It would just make it easier for my husband to read when he’s TDY or deployed, or when he’s home, for me to take books along when we travel or I’m waiting for an appointment.
Oh I am packing up to PCS to S. Korea. I will not have a Borders to shop at for all my wonderful reads. Don’t you feel sorry for me? I think an e-reader is perfect for every Military spouse living abroad. We can easily download all the books on our reading lists instead of waiting for them to come across the very, long oceans in the very, slow snailmail.
I cant tell you how many times ive downloaded book and converted them on my computer or handheld gaming systems and they get scrambled up and I cant read some of my books! i thought i could cut down on the books stackhing up around the house and on the counter tops and im my bag i carry around. Please pick me because carrying books around with me is giving my shoulders lumps and aches, but i cant stop reading! My husband doesnt like to carry books around with him he’s an electronic kind of guy and we would love love something like this. though it will never replace the way a real book feels in my hand. It would be really nice to have. Please Pick me.
yes, I think this will allow me/my husband to buy more books. Too often I am reading a blog or something else and hear about a book I’d love to read but forget about it by the time I get to a book store. This would give me the opportunity to go straight to the borders and purchase it right away. Plus if the books are cheaper then I am more likely to buy even more! and just from a specific store (Boarders) instead of going to any random store.
I blogged about your giveaway here.

Hubby and I love shopping for books. It makes a great date. An e-reader would definitely make shopping for the latest title more convenient, but I hope it won’t cut down on the dates!
I’m currently deployed to Camp Ramadi, Iraq, & a Reader would definitely change the way I shop for & read books. I have eBooks on my laptop, but I’m not allowed to take my laptop with my on my shift. a Reader would be allowed because of its smaller size.
Reasons I Would Love to Win:
- The 27th is the day before hubby’s birthday. What a great present!
- We could get rid of 1,000 lbs of HHG weight by using e-readers instead of buying books.
- Being overseas, it’s not always easy to get books you want. With an e-reader, it won’t be an issue! It will change the way we shop because often if we can’t find the book the first time we try we just give up. With a reader, we would be able to get anything and would read so much more!
(Question- Although we are military, we don’t have an AKO account, that’s only for Army. I am assuming any .mil email account will work?)
I think that this will make it very easy to shop for books, especially with all of our military travels!
this is the third blog that I am making an entry on, so obviously I WANT this e-reader! If we get it, I can sell tons of my favorite books on e-bay and still download them to have access to them. What a way to get rid of that excess weight for my next PCS! But I’m trying to send the e-reader to my hubby who is also in the military and is deployed in Iraq. Since he doesn’t have access to many books over there (at least ones that he’d like), he can easily download them! What a great V-day Gift!
I would love to give my husband a Reader before his upcoming deployment. It would save me quite a few trips of lugging books to the post office. Also, the Reader would provide instant gratification – no more waiting for weeks for packages to arrive to his APO!
Would love a reader! I think it would change the way I bought books simply because it would be more easier to just download them to the reader than to go to the store and buy hard copies.
This would be such a blessing in our house! We have a closet full of text books because my husband is such a nerd for science/math/physics/astronomy. I am sending him books constantly to Afghanistan, but he has to throw them away when he finishes them due to weight and storage limits. Even our apartment is crowded with the books. We spend so much money on books monthly, Borders and Barnes and Noble are just around the corner with a blessing and a curse all at once!
I would love to win one of these for him! It would be a great welcome home present! E-boks will make traveling and reading so much easier… there are already boxes upon boxes not to mention the shelves upon shelves filled with books at our house!
This will absolutely change reading for my husband. He can easily buy the eBook online and have it down/uploaded to the Reader while he’s deployed. No more waiting on a care package to arrive.
Melissa
P.S. I’ll provide an AKO address if I win. Thanks for understanding.
Awesome giveaway! This would us buy books WAY more often as we wouldn’t have to worry about where to store the books!
I’m an idiot. So I did just retweet your tweet that was in response to my tweet (get that yet?!) about the giveaways still open. I hope my being dumb doesn’t hurt my chances of winning
(yeah, I know it’s random.org… just kidding with you)
Hi! I would love to win this as a Valentine’s Day surprise for my husband who is Active Duty Air Force. He is an avid reader and this would be great for him to take on deployments and TDYs!
Thank you!
