Home Improvements

in Me Myself and I

So, when Hubs and I bought our house two years ago, we bought it with the idea of doing a few little things here and there to fix it up and make it more modern. There really isn’t much that we needed to do, and the only major projects involved would be some painting, getting rid of the linoleum in the kitchen/bathroom and replacing it with tile, and eventually replacing all the windows.

None of THOSE things have been done yet. Just an FYI.

However, I have started doing some painting. The kitchen has been painted, as well as the cabinets, and the “office” has been painted a lovely shade of bright blue (his choice, not mine). I plan on tackling the master bedroom, the two bathrooms and the living room as well in the next couple of months. We have a third bedroom, which is a lovely shade of primer white, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that some day that will be a nursery, so therefore, I don’t want to paint just yet.

Anyways … one of joys of owning a house that is 12 years old is that it is filled with BRASS.  Everything is brass. The lights, the chandeliers, the ceiling fans. EVERYTHING. And I cannot tell you how much I hate brass. To me, brass signifies white trash. I’m SORRY if you like it! I really am, and I don’t mean to offend. But I hate the stuff. It’s ugly and I want it gone.

So that is what we are currently working on. I had bought some new lights for the hallways and bathrooms while the hubs was gone (thank you two pack from Home Depot!) and today, we bought a LOT more lighting, all brushed nickle. So far, hubs has installed the new chandelier for the dining room, and we also bought a new ceiling fan for the living room. On top of those, we have some new track lighting for the kitchen, above the sink and some new vanity lights for the bathrooms.

I cannot tell you how  happy I am! It will be so nice to get these installed, and throw the brass away. And, I might even be tempted to paint now that I have nice lighting!

So if anyone wants to help, you know … feel free ;)

I will post pictures (before and after!) later!

XOXOXO,
The Army Wife

When Dave & I were house hunting, we looked at many a house o’ brass. But one topped them all: one house had not only brass door hardware, lights, and plumbing fixtures, but it also had brass SCREENS on the windows! The casement window hardware was brass, and the screens that popped in and out were shiny yellow brass.

Needless to say, it was ugly. Nice house, but someone was unwise during the build process!

Looks good so far… just remember baby steps! Don’t get caught trying to do too much at one time! :)

Hey, I did this too when we had a house! In case you haven’t installed a ceiling fan before… it’s a lot easier if you put the whole thing together on the ground and rest it on the ladder while you’re connecting it. Screw the directions. Who can hold a ceiling fan with one hand while connecting it with the other? I bet you love how your house is starting to look. Way to go with the painting, too.

Yeah, Allison, lesson learned on that one. Funny thing is I read your comment just as we had finished installing the ceiling fan. Pain in the ass!! We will definitely be putting together the next ceiling fan on the ground before installing.

I feel the same about brass. It is ugly, and our house was full of it too. We are slowly getting rid of it. We actually decided to get new lighting fixtures for the bathroom & hallway and put a ceiling fan in our kitchen. And Im pretty sure we will be brass-free. I love the oil-rubbed bronze look, that and brushed nickel.

Looks good so far!

Oh yeah I hate brass! Why do people think it’s pretty? Pretty ugly!

I love brushed nickel. We’ve done many a house improvement project over the years and of course I can’t think of any tricks as I type this comment. LOL
